JR. MOUNTAINEERS: All-Mountain
Information
Time
8:30am - 4:30pm
Session
4 Days, 1 Overnight
Description
Our All Mountain program uses hands-on, experiential learning strategies to develop practical outdoor leadership skills. Alongside our AMGA-certified mountain guides, participants dive into every aspect of trip planning and preparation, from route selection to risk management. They'll learn how to expertly navigate backcountry settings using both digital tools, like CalTopo, and physical tools like maps and compasses.
Each day, participants focus on a key leadership theme, building group trust and applying their skills in dynamic alpine environments. Participants will tackle top-rope climbing one day and embark on a backcountry scavenger hunt on another. The week culminates in an overnight expedition into the Pioneer Mountains where participants put their new skills to the test by choosing a suitable peak to summit as a group.
By the end of the week, Mountain Mavericks will have the confidence and technical skills to navigate wilderness settings safely and effectively, setting them up for future successful backcountry adventures in our local mountains and beyond.
By the end of the week, participants will be able to:
Plan and pack for an overnight in the outdoors
Read a map and use a compass to navigate on/off trail
Reference their location on a mapping app (CalTopo)
Practice the Leave No Trace (LNT) principles
Understand the basics of rock climbing, including equipment, movement skills, belaying, and rappelling
Effectively lead a group in a wilderness setting
See personal development and growth in themselves
