Mountain Mavericks

Students will learn the basics of leadership through hiking, climbing, camping, and summiting a peak. Each day we will focus on a particular theme to help develop essential outdoor skills from trip planning to mountain navigation using maps and compasses along with digital applications. We will emphasize the importance of building trust in a group during a day of rock climbing. A scavenger hunt through the mountains will allow us to practice our mapping techniques.  The end of the week will culminate with an overnight trip into the Pioneer Mountains, where we will pick a suitable peak to summit as a group.

By the end of the week, participants will be able to:

  • Understand how to plan and pack for an overnight in the outdoors

  • Read a map and use a compass to navigate on/off trail

  • Reference their location on a mapping app (CalTopo)

  • Practice the Leave No Trace (LNT) principles

  • Learn the basics of rock climbing, including equipment, movement skills, belaying, and rappelling

  • Learn skills to become an effective leader
